Chinatown San Francisco Review Guide

A Top Destination Site

Chinatown San Francisco. Chinese lanterns, dragon medallions, dim sum, and sesame chicken are only some of the traditional things you’ll find there.

The town is a must-see when visiting the city. I didn’t know how true this was until I took a trip there myself over Fourth of July weekend.

First of all, how does one get there? Does she just type in “Chinatown San Francisco” in Google Maps or does she need a definite location? The answer is – YES. For general directions, type “Chinatown San Francisco” in Maps or Waze and you are there.

That’s how I did it. 👍🏼

After finding a parking spot, I had to see “The Lights.” Not an official name but it’s the name I gave the parts of town that have traditional Chinese lanterns swaying from building to building.

As history has it, the Chinese would use lanterns as a primary light source. They could be used both indoors and out to provide a shaded light for reading and working. The protection from wind provided by the decorative silk or paper shade kept the lanterns from going out with the breeze.

Luckily, the lights are easy to find. Just remember cross streets – Jackson Street and Grant Ave. You’ll see the lights immediately. The deal on parking – it’s street and metered or $10 – $15 in a public lot.

For lunch, my stomach was set on one restaurant and one restaurant only – House of Nanking! The sesame chicken was so delicious. Hence, the main reason why Nanking is known as one of the best Chinese restaurants in Chinatown San Francisco.

Be prepared for a wait line upon entry. Fortunately, it’s not too long of a wait, but that also depends on the time and day you arrive.

Nextly, prepare for limited space when dining. You’ll literally be sitting with strangers in very close quarters.

Most of all, Chinatown San Francisco gives tourists the feel of authentic Chinese cuisines, shops, clothing, paintings, decor, treats, and events when touring the area. There’s so much to take in when it comes to Chinese culture. All you have to do is show up. Take your camera for incredible photo opportunities and spending money to enjoy all the treats Chinatown has to offer.
