The scorching three-day festival kicked off early Friday, July 28 at Gilroy’s own Christopher Ranch. The hot heat didn’t keep visitors away as there were over 102,000 visitors in attendance until gates closed Sunday at 6 pm.
Sunday was a big day as Food Network star and celebrity chef, Giada De Laurentiis, hosted an iron chef-style competition, Garlic Showdown. Chefs went head to head using specific ingredients to create savory dishes.
Carlos Pineda from Culinary Academy and Kneaded Bakery at Rebekah Children’s Services won the title of Garlic Showdown champion and took home the lucrative $3,000 cash prize.
Winners in our book – the Gourmet Alley Pyro Chefs! Cooking through firey flames, chefs grilled and sauteed the official food of the festival: garlic laced calamari and scampi.
Other Gilroy Garlic Festival meals featured included Pasta con Pesto, Pepper Steak Sandwich, Stuffed Mushrooms, Italian Sausage Sandwich, Zesty Garlic Fried Calamari, Garlic Bread, Garlic Fries, Garlic Watermelon, Garlic Ice Cream, and lots more!
