‘Minecraft’ Gameplay Comes To Boston Movie Theaters With First-Ever Video Game League For Kids
The world’s first in-theater gaming league, Super League Gaming, will take over 80+ movie theaters across 25 major U.S. cities for their Super League Gaming Summer Tour and is stopping in select Boston-area theaters beginning on August 17th, 2015. Players around the country will have the unique opportunity to play Super League’s first game, Minecraft, side-by-side and in-person at their local movie theater for the first time ever.
Super League has partnered with the nation’s three largest movie theater chains — Regal Entertainment Group, AMC Theatres, and Cinemark Theatres, as well as luxury chain iPic Theaters — to transform video games into collaborative, team-building activities for kids.
The coast-to-coast, 25-city tour will run from June 15th through August 26th to introduce Super League Gaming’s unique concept and get the word out about league gameplay, which starts with 6-week sessions onOctober 5th.
“I think video games are great in the way they can capture a child’s imagination, but imagine adding a real-world social element to that which brings the whole thing to life in a positive way,” says Super League President and COO Brett Morris. “That’s why we created Super League Gaming. We’re just a group of dads who want to help kids connect with each other and develop social bonds as they play and engage in the games they love. We like to think of it as little league for the digital era.”
Each event is comprised of a 100-minute session that includes live team gameplay and individual battles, while players work to climb the leaderboard. Gamers play in the traditional first-person view on their laptops while watching a customized third-person aerial ‘world view’ with all players on the theater screen.
“Cinemark is very excited to be working with Super League, as more and more of our theatres are being recognized as ideal venues for gamers to play and engage in eSports,” says Cinemark VP, Head of Marketing & Communications, James Meredith. “With our large screens, incredible sound, cutting-edge technology and extremely comfortable seats, our multiplexes provide a gaming experience that cannot be replicated.”
Minecraft, one of the world’s most downloaded computer games, lets players use their imaginations to build anything they can conjure up in a 3D world. The popularity of the game has exploded in recent years thanks to YouTube gamers like CaptainSparklez, a YouTube celebrity with over 8.6 million subscribers, and a founding gamer among the Super League team. ParkerGames, another prominent YouTube Minecraft celebrity, will also be at the August 17th event at AMC Loews Boston Common 19, and hosting a special pre-game red carpet event for gamers, families and media.
“Our own children were the inspiration for Super League,” says Super League Gaming Co-Founder and Chief Visionary John Miller. “Making games interactive, team-based, and bringing gamers into a movie theater to play face-to-face really changes the experience for everyone. Parents, especially, love watching their kids build and collaborate. Playing on a big screen lets everyone in on the action and makes it far more collaborative and rewarding.”
The Summer Tour will bring Super League Gaming to over 80 theaters in the U.S. for $20 per event, followed by 6-week league sessions in the fall where gamers play once a week for $100 per session.
Super League’s Summer Tour will be stopping in the Boston-area theaters listed below, and media are invited to attend the August 17th event at AMC Loews Boston Common 19 Theater. The Super League founding team will also be onsite and available for interviews during this event. For press passes or other requests please email Jasmine ().
